Picking The Right Black Labrador For You

by Brooke Sunderland

When it is time to start considering bringing a new dog for your home, you want to go over all of your options and really think about what qualities are important to you. If you want a dog that is loyal, dedicated, smart and gentle, then the Black Labrador may be the perfect choice for you and your family. They are quickly becoming one of the more popular breeds to own because they are so great in a house environment and do very well with people.

As it is, this breed of dog is one of the most popular dogs being used by police and other types of government bodies. These dogs serve as wonderful detectives and have a high working ability and never give up easily. These dogs are not only great for work but also for families as they are very gentle, intelligent, and they have a wonderful good nature about them. But, this breed must be trained on the basics of housebreaking because if left undone, they can become very boisterous.

There is a lot to love when it comes to Black Labradors and that is not just referring to how smart they are. These dogs are anything but your typical lap dogs, as they will grow to become very large. The females weigh in as the smallest but they are still anywhere from fifty five to seventy pounds. The males, the larger of the two, end up being somewhere between sixty-five and eighty pounds.

Their coat is smooth and short and they are prone to shedding so make sure that they are groomed on a regular basis. Their tail is pretty straight and is known to be somewhat on the strong side so you may want to watch small children around those tails. And it is those tails and coat that helps them with swimming as the tail acts like a rudder for when it wants to go in a different direction and the coat is almost waterproof.

Black Labradors are certainly an ideal pet for families as they are extremely gentle. In fact, they can be so gentle that some Labradors have been known to be carry to carry an egg in their mouth without ever breaking it.

They are also not very aggressive or territorial like some other breeds and this is great because those things can cause trouble from time to time. Also, the owner needs to keep in mind to watch their personal belongings, as this dog does like to chew. But, as long as proper training is given, this habit will cease.

It does take about three years for Black Labradors to fully mature which means three years of puppy fun and training. But in the end, they are very mature and respectful dogs and the female is normally the gender that ends up being a little more independent versus the male.

Be aware that this breed does love its food and will always try and ask for more and more food so it is up to the owner to watch how much the dog eats in order to keep it at a healthy weight.
